Abstract

An attempt has been made to study aluminium based dilute alloys of the binary systems: Al-Mg, Al-Si, Al-Fe, and Al-Cu and the ternary systems: Al-Mg-Si and Al-Fe-Si, and Al-Mg-v, Al-Fe-v, and Al-Cu-v where v denotes a vacancy. These alloys are investigated using the nuclear magnetic resonance technique to study the behaviour of two different kinds of metallic impurity atoms in the aluminium matrix. Moreover, the effect of heat treatment of the samples on first order quadrupole effect is investigated. The results show, that the physical effects connected with the presence of two different kinds of metallic impurity atoms are additive in the aluminium matrix. The role of the vacancies is compared with that of the metallic impurity atoms. An expression has been found suitable to describe the ternary system, in analogy with that introduced by Rowland in the case of binary alloys. A functional dependence of exponential form between the first-order wipe-out number and the excess wipe-out number is found which is suggested to be due to the quenched-in vacancies.
