Inverse Raman study of the orientational behavior of nematic 4-cyano-4′-pentylbiphenyl (5CB) liquid crystal samples

Abstract

Picosecond inverse Raman spectroscopy has been employed to determine the orientational behavior of the nematic liquid crystal 4-cyano-4′-pentylbiphenyl (5CB). The inverse Raman spectrum was recorded in the wavenumber range 1000-2300 cm-1 and the polarization characteristics of some Raman bands were measured. The reorientation of the liquid crystal director in response to rapid application and removal of an A.C. electric field applied across the sample was monitored. It was found that the response of 5CB to the field is much more rapid than is the recovery when die field is removed. For example in a 25 μm thick sample the time constants were found to be 11 ms and 75 ms for switching and recovery, respectively, when a ±5V A.C. field was applied.
