The authors give an overview about their researches on the microcirculation of the rat urinary bladder using intravital video microscopy. This study presents the development of a standardized animal model. The microcirculatory characteristics of the urinary bladder were described under physiologic conditions and after ischemia-reperfusion injury. The microcirculatory parameters were stable during the observed 180 minutes period under physiologic conditions, but the ischemia-reperfusion resulted inflammatory reactions and other disturbances of the microcirculation. This new, well functioning and reproductible model can serve as a basis for further investigations and can contribute to the solution of scientific questions.
