Infrared and X-ray measurements on various inorganic ion exchangers

Abstract

Investigations were carried out on crystalline cerium phosphate and arsenate in the lithium, sodium, potassium and caesium forms. The various salt forms were prepared according to the results obtained in ion uptake measurements. It was found that the water loss up to 150° is about one mole of water of crystallization. The bands belonging to structural water decreases with increase in the alkali metal content. The stretching frequencies are characteristic of HAsO3-4 and PO3-4 groups, changing according to the ionic radii, i.e., samples with different alkali metal contents have different structures.
