Abstract

The rhyolite tuff is an important building and ornamental stone that has been used in several Hungarian monuments like the castle of Eger. The tuff was not only a construction material but it was also used as foundation rock and host rock of large network of cellars with several stability problems. Petrographical tests showed the various mineral phases and the heterogeneous texture of the material. Petrophysical tests proved the influence of water content on strength and its sensitivity to weathering.
