Abstract

Illumination of thin vanadium sheets by the focused beam of a cw CO//2 laser results in formation of vanadium pentoxide hillocks of height exceeding 1 mm. The circle-symmetrical cone form of the oxide formed follows quite well the profile of the temperature distribution. The hillocks consists of a network of porous tubular needle-like crystals.
