Influence of a protein free diet on the functioning of the renin angiotensin system in the rat (Hungarian)

Abstract

The effect of a protein free diet in rats was evaluated and it was found that the total protein content of the serum, the activity of renin in plasma, the renin substrate level in plasma and the blood pressure dropped while the hematocrit rose. The appropriate comparative values in groups on the diet and in controls showed a significant linear relation between total serum protein, renin activity of plasma, renin substrate level of plasma and systolic blood pressure. In the kidney of rats on protein free diet, the renin concentration was not lower than in controls unlike the plasma renin activity. It was further shown that the effect of diet produced a lower pressor reaction to angiotensin II.
