Indirect radiotracer study of the electrosorption of OH- ions and the formation of the oxide layer on gold electrodes. A study of the induced adsorption of labelled Ca2+ ions

The potential dependence of the adsorption of labelled Ca2+ ions was studied at gold electrodes in alkaline medium (0.1-1.0 mol dm-3 NaOH) at a low Ca2+ ion concentration. It was found that a significant adsorption occurred at low potentials where the formation of surface oxides cannot be assumed (non-oxide region); only electrosorption of OH- ions is expected on the basis of literature data. It was assumed that the adsorption of Ca2+ ions is induced by electrosorbed OH- ions. The occurrence of a competitive adsorption between Na+ and Ca2+ ions was shown. It is suggested that the behaviour of the gold/alkaline solution interface should be interpreted in terms of simultaneous adsorption of OH species and cations. It was shown that the formation and ageing of the oxide layer are also accompanied with the adsorption of Ca2+ ions.
