Abstract

The paper examines the association of the first-trimester fetal nuchal translucency thickness and congenital heart defects. The pre- and postnatal course and outcome of the 5244 pregnancies were examined between January 1998 and December 2000 in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Medical Genetics, University of Szeged, retrospectively. 5186 births and 58 therapeutic abortions were recorded during this period. Altogether 258 (4.9%) congenital malformation were detected, 50 (19.4%) of which were heart defects with normal karyotype, 9 of them were known prenatally by foetal echocardiography. The measurement of foetal NT thickness was available in 41 of the 50 foetuses with heart defects: it was ≥3 mm in 20 (48.8%) foetuses. The increased NT thickness in chromosomally normal foetuses was found to be associated with congenital heart defects. An increased NT of ≥3 mm can be regarded a selection criterion for early second-trimester targeted foetal echocardiography.
