Abstract

Biopsy specimens of involved and uninvolved skin were studied in 4 patients suffering from lichen planus-like chronic cutaneous graft-versus-host-reaction (GVHR) using murine monoclonal antibodies against several cell surface markers of effector and/or accessory cells of the immune system. In contrast to uninvolved skin, keratinocytes were found to express HLA-DR-, CD54-, CD36-, CD16-, CD21- and Leu-8-antigens in all biopsies from the involved skin. The epidermis showed a predominance of CD3-, CD8- and CD11a-positive T lymphocytes. The obtained data suggest the involvement of a cytokine-mediated cellular immune reaction in the pathogenesis of lichen planus-like chronic cutaneous GVHR.
