Abstract

The number of patients suffering from autoimmune diseases is increasing and the prognosis of the patients is improving. The article gives an overview of the present status of immunomodulatory therapies. The author deals with the non-specific and the selective forms of immunosuppression. He gives a short summary about biological treatments, the induction of tolerability and about anticytokine therapies, In this review the modern treatment strategies of rheumatoid arthritis are also discussed, among them the early, the combined, the antigen-specific and the stem cell treatment modalities are detailed. It is emphasised that the individual differences are important to take into consideration in the treatment of autoimmune diseases.
