Hydrolytic reactions of copper(II) bipyridine complexes

Abstract

The hydrolytic reactions of Cu(II)-2,2′-bipyridine complexes have been studied in aqueous solutions at 25°C and in 1.0 M KNO3. The formation of the ternary hydroxo complexes Cu2(bpy)2(OH)22+, Cu(bpy)(OH)2, Cu2(bpy)4(OH)3+, and Cu(bpy)2(OH)+ (bpy = 2,2′-bipyridine) were verified by using pH-metry and a 1H NMR relaxation method. The logarithms of the overall stability constants for these species are 7.27 ± 0.02, -9.10 ± 0.02, 23.46 ± 0.05, and 5.38 ± 0.02, respectively. The line-broadening effect of the paramagnetic species on the NMR signal of the bulk solvent is discussed.
