High resolution neutron spectroscopy for helium isotopes

Abstract

A high resolution fast neutron time-of-flight spectrometer is described, neutron time-of-flight spectra are taken using a specially designed TDC in connection to an on-line computer. The high time-of-flight resolution of 5 ps/m enables the study of the total cross section of 4He for neutrons near the 23+ resonance in the 5He nucleus. The resonance parameters were determined by a single level Breit-Winger fit to the data.
