Heat production of muscle in isotonic and isometric circumstances at length of rest during one twitch

Abstract

The heat development during the activity of frog muscle was examined with a thermopile heat conduction calorimeter having a sensitivity of 10-7 cal/s. It was found with muscles of different types that the heat production for one twitch at length of rest was about 1/3 greater in isometric (stretch) than in isotonic (non stretch) contraction. It is assumed that crystallization of muscle proteins plays a part in the difference.
