Harmonic force field between the (0001) surface of graphite and adsorbed methane

Abstract

Empirical potentials were used to approximate the interaction between the (0001) surface of graphite and a single methane molecule. The frequency of the vibration perpendicular to the surface was obtained by assuming that the force field under consideration is harmonic, and also by solving the one-dimensional Schrödinger equation of the vibration. It was found that the two approaches yielded nearly identical excitation energies for the fundamental transition.
