Abstract

The activity of George Hevesy paved the way for a number of disciplines. In the field of earth sciences he contributed to the establishment of Nd isotope geochemistry and K-Ar geochronology. In Hungary there is a K-Ar laboratory where mostly the geochronology of the Carpatho-Balkan region is studied. It has been shown that commercially available noble gas mass spectrometers are technically obliviated: (i) their vacuum is at least one order of magnitude worse than it would be technically possible and (ii) they do not use position sensitive detectors for simultaneous measurement of isotopes.
