Generation of intense diffraction-limited white light and 4-fs pulses

Abstract

Nearly diffraction-limited truly white-light femtosecond continuum exhibiting comparable spectral intensities all over the range of 400-1100 nm was generated. Experiments were performed using an argon-filled fused-silica capillary with an inner diameter of 250 μm and a length of 95 cm. 25-fs pulses with energies ranging from 0.2 mJ to 1 mJ were passed into the waveguide. By optimizing the pressure, white-light continuum was observed in the entire pulse energy range considered. Preliminary calculations and computer simulations indicate that self-phase modulation induced by ionization provides a significant contribution to the observed spectral broadening and blue shift.
