FT-IR transmission and emission studies of adsorbed molecules in the low frequency region

Abstract

In this paper the recent results of our infrared absorption and emission spectroscopic studies of (C5H5)Fe(CO)2I and (COD)PtCl2 adsorbed on SiO2 are presented. It is shown that most oxide type catalytic supports have transparency windows in the region below 400 cm-1, which permits measurements of adsorbed species, especially if a high sensitivity Ge-bolometer is used. The infrared emission studies have also been extended to the far IR region; some examples are given when spectral features of adsorbed species could be observed in the absorption region of the substrate. An explanation is put forward for the appearance of weak negative (absorption) bands in the emission spectra.
