One of the main indications of frozen section histology is the intraoperative analysis of breast lesions. Indications for frozen sections (decision on dignity, assessment of the margins, providing material for special studies) have considerably been reduced. Despite their relative reliability, frozen sections also carry some risk of erroneous interpretation and contraindications have been formulated too. Frozen sections are a part of the intraoperative consultation, thus both clinicians and pathologists should know about the indications, sources of error and contraindications for a proper performance. This review summarizes the main aspects of frozen breast sections and gives the relevant background information.
