Gingivitis was found in the gums of 46.94% out of a total of 850 pregnant women. The frequency of occurrence of the gingivitis was not dependent on the stage of pregnancy but increased proportionately with the age of the subject. In 98.47% of the subjects with gingivitis a local cause was demonstrated and in only 1.53% was the condition found to be due to the pregnancy. Elimination of the local factors causing inflammation, together with thorough oral hygiene, promote the healing of gingivitis in pregnancy.
