The bis(butanoato)zinc(II) and μ4-oxohexa-μ-butanoatotetrazinc(II) complexes of n- and isobutanoic acids {Zn[CH3(CH2)2COO]2, Zn4O[CH3(CH2)2COO]6, Zn[(CH3)2CHCOO]2 and Zn4O[(CH3)2CHCOO]6} were prepared and their infrared spectra recorded in the solid state and in carbon tetrachloride solution. Both forms of zinc butanoates, i.e., the bis(carboxylato) and oxo salts were found to exist as tetranuclear oxozinc carboxylates in carbon tetrachloride solution as a result of the equilibrium {A figure is presented} The oxozinc butanoates decomposed to bis(carboxylato) salts and zinc oxide during crystallization: {A figure is presented} Three fundamental types of structure were distinguished and their structural and chemical changes could clearly be monitored by means of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy.
