Formation of carboxylato copper oxygen complexes in the reaction of metallic copper with 1,2-dicarbonyls and dioxygen

Mixtures of 1,2-dicarbonyls such as benzil, 2,2′-furil and di(2-pyridyl)-diketone and metallic Cu (stoichiometry 1:2) react with O2 (Cu:O2=4:1) in pyridine to give complexes of the formula [(RCO2Cu)4O2pyn] (3) (R=phenyl, 2-furil or 2-pyridyl). With benzil and 2,2′-bipyridine (bipy) or tetramethylethylenediamine (tmeda) a mixture of bibenzoato(2,2′-bipyridine)copper(II) (4a) or bibenzoato-(tetramethylethylenediamine)copper(II) (4b) and active "CuO" were formed. The complexes (3) and the mixtures of (4a) or (4b) with the active "CuO" oxidatively cleave the C-C bond in benzil under Ar.
