Abstract

The formation and interaction of membrane tubes was observed. The formation of these tubes is a crucial step in many biological processes and is highly nontrivial and involves first-order shape transitions. The force exerted by an emerging tube was found to be a nonmonotonic function of its length. The behavior of the detached tubes was found to be like semiflexible filaments with a short persistence length.
