Fine structural changes in the heart muscle after heart contusion

Abstract

The authors describe electronmicroscopic changes caused by heart contusion in a 51 year old male patient who survived for 6 days after receiving his injuries. In the walls of ventricles an expanded myocardial lesion was observed. In case of compression and contusion the authors consider the damage of the myocardial contractile elements as the primary lesion, which results in hypercontraction, tear and necrosis of myofilaments. The changes in mitochondrial and sacroplasmal reticulum are thought to be a secondary alteration due to hypoxia.
