Factors influencing the formation of mixed ligand complexes of nickel(II) and zinc(II)

Abstract

The stability constants of some different diamine-diamine and diamine-glycine nickel(II) and zinc(II) mixed ligand complexes have been determined pH-metrically. The formation enthalpies of the nickel(II) complexes were measured calorimetrically. It was found that the higher the difference between the log K1/K2 values of the parent complexes, the higher the stability of the mixed complexes. Thermodynamic and spectral parameters of the nickel(II) complexes revealed that mixed ligand complex formation will be unfavourable if five-membered and six-membered chelate rings are simultaneously involved in the coordination sphere.
