In the course of synthesizing heat-integrated distillation systems the significance of optimizing the thermal condition of feed is emphasized. A simple expression is derived to show the influences of the main parameters on the economic benefits derived from optimizing the fraction vapourizatio of the feeds to the individual columns. By a computer-aided parametric study the profitability of heat integration and extensive state optimization is compared. Especially in the case of rather high temperature difference between bottom and feed the effort on optimizing the thermal condition of feeds proved to be as important as the heat integration itself.
