Abstract

In the present paper the authors report their experiences about immunohistochemical investigations on claudin-1 expression in healthy canine liver samples. The investigations performed with humanized anti-claudin-1 antibodies revealed that in the healthy canine liver the first 5-6 periportal liver cell layers (I. acinar zone) show intense membrane positivity. For the pathological analysis of the canine chronic active hepatitis (interface hepatitis) the authors suggest the introduction of a novel grading system based on the loss of claudin-1 expression. Further investigations are needed to verify the role of claudin-1 molecule in the development of canine hepatic tumours. The cellular components of the intact canine liver were negative for claudin-3 and -4 molecules.
