This study was designed to evaluate three portable blood glucometers (Bayer Glucometer Elite 2000, D-Cont Cabrio, D-Cont-III D-test) for measuring blood glucose concentration in dogs (n=27). The glucose concentration was determined in venous whole blood, in plasma and by the Elite glucometer in capillary whole blood of clinically normal and hyperglycaemic dogs. The results were compared to measurements with a photometric device (Lange LP400), used as a reference method. Regression analysis between whole blood values obtained on portable meters and plasma values obtained on Lange showed close correlation (r=0.91, r=0.95, r=0.92, p<0.05). Regression analysis between plasma glucose values achieved by portable and reference devices showed r=0.93, r=0.92, r=0.83. There was a significant difference (p<0.05) between plasma glucose concentrations measured by portable glucometers and the reference device. The comparison of capillary values and venous values using the Bayer Glucometer Elite resulted r=0.98 in dogs.
