Examination of the ultrastructure of conserved homolog tendon grafts in humans

Abstract

The authors examined the transformation in ultrastructure of homologous tendon grafts in man. 120 days after grafting, tenoblasts and mast cells were found in the matrix, and these were accompanied by collagen fibres which originated from the breakdown of the graft. The degree of collagenous neoformation was different in areas poor in fibres, and areas of regularly arranged collagen fibres also occurred. After 20 months of tendon graft inlay, many tenoblasts and a great range of degree of neoformation of fibres were found.
