Exact and discretized topology optimization of multipurpose multiload structures

Abstract

After discussing the relevance and practicality of various research topics in topology optimization, the theory of exact optimal layouts for multipurpose, multiload structures is introduced and the underlying concepts of structural universe (ground structure) and optimality criteria outlined. The currently used methodology for deriving optimality criteria for exact optimal layouts is described and then illustrated in detail by deriving exact layout optimality criteria for trusses with displacement constraints. After discussing general geometrical properties of optimal truss layouts for several load conditions and displacement constraints, and comparing the corresponding optimality criteria with those for trusses with stress constraints, examples of exact optimal truss layouts are given. Finally, optimality criteria (DCOC) methods for deriving optimal discretized layouts are reviewed and illustrated with examples.
