REINTERPRETATION OF **1**3**9La NUCLEAR QUADRUPOLE RESONANCE (NQR) DATA.

Abstract

The understanding of the properties of pure La//2CuO//4 is of basic importance for models of the recently discovered high-T//c superconductivity in doped La-Cu-oxides. A reinterpretation of the results of recent **1**3**9La nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) measurements on La//2CuO//4 by Y. Kitaoka et al. reveals an antiferromagnetic order in this material at low temperature. The magnitude and the direction of the local field at the La sites are calculated. Supposing localized moments on copper atoms as the source of the magnetic field, it is shown that the ordering of magnetic moments on copper sites is not the simplest 'chessboard' antiferromagnetic type.
