Abstract

This study was carried out at the Hungarian National Artificial Insemination Centre in order to evaluate the seasonal effects on the quantitative and qualitative parameters of sperm production using sperm analyser equipment. The volume of the ejaculate (VE), percentage of living sperms (PLS), spermatozoa concentration (SC), motility score (MC), percentage of motile spermatozoa (PMS), speed of movement of sperms (SMS) and percentage of sperms moving straightforward (PSMS) were collected and observed in three seasons (n=15, summer, autumn, winter) in Holstein-Friesian breeding bulls. Every season, the sperm collection was done for three successive weeks on the same day (summer: n= 41, autumn: n=39, winter: n =42). The same sperm samples for PMS, SMS and PSMS were measured three times by sperm analyser equipment (HTM version 7, USA, Danvers). The seasonal effects were confirmed on semen characteristics by multiple regression analysis (MANOVA). The average values of VE were similar in the three seasons (summer: 5.1 cm3, autumn: 5.4 cm3, winter: 5.7 cm3). The summer result for PLS was higher than in autumn (+6.37%, P
