Abstract

The non-invasive imaging technique like computer tomography (CT) could establish a valuable tool for the determination of body composition performed in series on living animals. In this study, we carried out the statistical evaluation of the thigh muscle volume of rabbits estimated by CT based on the data of 554 rabbits at a mean age and body weight of 10 weeks and 2.5 kg, respectively. The first objective was to evaluate the effect of different evaluation techniques on the accuracy of CT measurements using estimated thigh muscle volume and slaughtered thigh muscle weight in Pannon White rabbits. Depending on the Hounsfield units (HU) (40-120, 30-120, 20-120 HU) that defined muscle the obtained correlation coefficients were 0.79, 0.88, and 0.89, respectively. The highest correlation coefficient (0.89) was found using the HU 20-120 interval. These values were higher than the corresponding values applying of partial correlation using PROC CORR of SAS removing the effect of body weight. Moreover, using another estimation technique (measuring one equivalent segmentation cycle including all tissues - threshold base segmentation - of scanned rabbits] at the same interval (40-120 HU) resulted similar correlation coefficient to the corresponding value estimated by the default evaluation procedure of this study. Finally, the study aimed to estimate the Pearson correlation using sub datasets restricting the slaughter weight interval (2.4-2.6 kg). The highest coefficient correlation (0.78) was estimated at the interval from 20-120 HU, followed by the correlation value measured at the interval from 30-120 (0.75) and 40-120 HU (0.60), respectively.
