An indirect method was developed suitable for estimating the dissolved oxygen concentration in shake-flasks. The method relies on measuring the respiration rate of microbes, estimating the oxygen transfer rate and the Csat value of oxygen. Oxygen concentrations of fermentations on minimal and complex media with different oxygen transfer rates were calculated by this procedure.
