Abstract

Because of the worldwide spreading of antibiotic resistance, it became necessary also in Hungary to establish a national resistance monitoring system, with which it is possible to follow the sensitivity of animal pathogenic, zoonotic and the so-called indicator bacteria to antibiotics. Basis of the computer system, enabling equivalent evaluation is a central computer, which stores basic values and all results of measurements. One or more places of measuring, able to measure diameter of inhibitor zones attach to this through network, where video camera connected to the computer shows the picture of Petri-dish on the screen, the program shows the diameter drawn by the mouse in mm, and evaluates on the basis of limits, characteristic to the bacterium in question. Institutes, sending data to the system work according to the recommendations of NCCLS, the program evaluates on the basis of this. To the centre unlimited number of computer, suitable for measurement and connected with camera may be connected and thus, it is possible that the data of bacteria originating from animals, foodstuffs and if necessary from humans are evaluated in the same system. The authors set up 32 antibiotic panels, taking into account the active agents authorised for veterinary use in Hungary, natural and cross resistance, mechanism of resistance, different sensitivity of the species to the certain active agents and the recommendations of the Office International des Epizooties (OIE) Group on Antimicrobial Resistance. Members of the panel may be changed even during measurement. The database records the name of the examined bacterium, length of its diameter, its qualification against the examined antibiotic and the age, species and organ of the animal from which the bacterium originates. Since January, 2001 in each month resistance examination of E. coli, Salmonella, Campylobacter and Enterococcus strain cultured from large intestinal sample, taken from a cattle and swine herd and broiler chicken flock, slaughtered in a slaughterhouse of all the 19 counties is performed. Thus there are data during the whole year from all part of the country.
