Abstract

Introduction: Over the last few years, the formulation of nanofibrous drug delivery systems has become an extensively investigated area of the pharmaceutical development because of their unique properties. As a result of their exceptional structural properties, like the high surface-volume ratio, the high porosity and the possibility to the control of the crystalline amorphous phase transition, they became in the focus of the drug research. They possess several biopharmaceutical advantages, such as improving the dissolution rate and extent of the poorly soluble drugs and providing controlled drug release. The applied materials, the type of the preparation methods and its circumstances contribute to the advantageous properties. Purpose and Methods: The purpose of the present paper is to provide a literature overview of the most common micro-and macrostructural characterization methods of electrospun fibers. In addition, the manuscript aimed at the presentation of not only the widely applied characterization methods but those not yet widespread but offering special analysis options which could expand the preformulation studies offibrous delivery systems. Conclusions: The high sensitivity of micro-and nanofibrous drug delivery systems to various solution, process and environmental parameters enables the fine tuning of the functionality-related properties of the prepared systems. Although general formulation parameters covering each system cannot be determined, but the monitoring of the functionality-related macro-and microstructural properties of the initial gels or prepared fibers allows the exploration of relationships which could lead to novel formulation strategies.
