Electronmicroscopy of cytoplasmatic crystals in alcoholic liver lesions (Hungarian)

Abstract

Liver biopsies from 50 patients with alcoholic liver disease were examined electron microscopically. In every stage of the disease intramitochondrial paracrystalloid formations were observed. Fibrillar hyalin of alcoholic origin was found in cases of alcoholic hepatitis. In 3 cases of alcoholic fatty liver a peculiar cytoplasmic paracrystalloid inclusion was seen. This inclusion consisted of membraneless parallely disposed fibrils. After changing the plane of the preparations which contained inclusions by means of a goniometer the structure of the inclusions acquired the form of a 'honeycomb'. The inclusions in question cannot be regarded as identical with intramitochondrial inclusions nor with the fibrils of the socalled alcoholic hyalin. The formation and function of these inclusions is still unknown.
