Abstract

The structure of the alveoli of the lung was investigated by the ruthenium red technique on human material obtained by biopsy. On the surface of epithelial cells a 150 to 200 Å thick ruthenium positive cell free layer was found. Some intracytoplasmatic inclusions of granular pneumocytes (of type II) also showed a ruthenium positive reaction. Myelin figures appeared to be ruthenium negative.
