Electronic transition moments and optical absorption for trans-polyacetylene

Abstract

Electronic eigenstates and transition moments have been evaluated for finite polyenes in a simple one electron Hückel model. The results are used to describe the shape of the optical absorption in trans polyacetylene quantitatively. Very good agreement with experimental results if found if long and short segments of undisturbed conjugations are assumed to be distributed along the chains whereas a distribution with only long segments or a simple quasi-one-dimensional band model can not explain the experiments.
