Electron shakeoff accompanying internal conversion

Abstract

The electron shakeoff probabilities accompanying the internal conversion process have been calculated in the sudden approximation, using screened relativistic hydrogenic wave functions. The screening constants have been determined from the relativistic self-consistent-field calculations and the presence of a vacancy resulting from internal conversion has been taken into account. The present results indicate that relativistic effects cause an appreciable increase in the probabilities. It is also shown that the prediction of Carlson et al. is a good approximation to the shakeoff probability accompanying internal conversion. The calculated results have been compared with available experimental data. There is fairly good agreement between the calculated and the recently measured values.
