Electron microscopic study of human adenoviruses with different interferon inducing ability

Abstract

Human adenovirus types 6, 8, 12 and 16 were found to induce different amounts of interferon in chick embryo fibroblast cells. Types 8 and 12 were more effective than types 6 and 16. The interferon inducing ability did not depend on the multiplicity of infection. A possible correlation between the non viral paracrystal forming and the interferon inducing abilities of types 6, 8, 12 and 16 was studied. The events in virus infected HEp 2 cells were observed by electron microscopy. Different morphologic changes were observed during the replication of different types. The effective interferon inducers failed to stimulate the formation of non viral paracrystalline structures, which were demonstrated only in type 6 infected HEp 2 cells. The findings suggest that the interferon inducing capacity of human adenoviruses does not depend on their ability to stimulate paracrystals during replication. (18 references.)
