ELECTROCATALYTIC REDUCTION OF ALICYCLIC KETONES ON PLATINIZED PLATINUM IN ACID MEDIUM.

Abstract

In view of the fact that alicyclic ketones can be formed as intermediate products in electrocatalytic conversions of organic compounds, the authors were interested in studying the reduction of these compounds. The authors studied the electrocatalytic reduction of cyclopentanone and cyclohexanone on platinum. Experiments on the determination of the amount of electricity consumed for the reduction of cyclopentanone and cyclohexanone showed that in both cases approx. 3. 5F is required per mole of the corresponding ketone. This means that the amount of hydrocarbon in the reaction products reaches the substantial value (approximately 75%). It is shown that in the electroreduction of alicyclic ketones in acid medium (as well as that of aliphatic ketones), alcohols and hydrocarbons are formed.
