Abstract

A possible way of recycling of ground tyre rubber (GTR, grain size: 0.4-0.7 mm) was followed by melt blending of GTR into various thermoplastic matrices. The influence of GTR addition on technical relevant properties like yield stress, Young's modulus, notched impact strength and damping properties was determined. In addition the GTR particles were swollen in paraffinic plasticizing oil in order to alter their surface properties and the effects of this plastification on the mechanical property profile of thermoplastic/GTR blends were determined. Negative and positive effects of GTR incorporation were found depending on the compatibility of GTR with thermoplastics.
