Effects of chelating agents on the quasiliving carbocationic polymerization of isobutylene

Abstract

Quasiliving carbocationic polymerization (QLCCP) of isobutylene was carried out in the presence of chelating agents, including, 2,4-pentanedione (PD), dioctyl phthalate (DOP) and N,N,N′,N′-tetramethyl ethylene diamine (TMEDA), in dichloromethane/n-hexane 40/60 v/v solvent mixture at -78°C. The stability of the growing species was determined by the application of long monomerless periods under polymerization conditions and subsequent monomer addition.
