The cardiovascular capacity of the BUT 8 meat-type commercial turkey and the bronze type turkey was compared in vivo with modern diagnostic imaging tools (cardiac MR). The bronze type turkey is used as a registered genetic reserve in Hungary, kept extensively since the 1960's, and it has not been selected for any trait. The body composition analysis was performed by CT imaging. The live weight was measured prior to slaughtering, while post slaughtering weight measurements of the heart, breast-and thigh fillet of each animal were performed using a pair of standard dissection method. The measurements were made on the 12th, 16th and 20th week. Five female and five male birds from the two different genotypes were measured, respectively at each time point. At each time point the weight gain of the BUT 8 meat-type turkey significantly exceeded that of the bronze type turkey. The relative heart weight of the BUT 8 meat-type turkey showed a decreasing tendency (p=0.07), with a reduction from 0.45% on the 12th week of age to 0.37% on the 20 th week of age. The relative heart weight of the bronze type turkey did not show significant changes during the examination period (p< 0.05). The left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF%) of the BUT 8 meat-type turkey was 69.41±2.63% on the 12th week of age, decreased to 68.16±1.72% on the 16th week of age and 67.80±2.98% by the 20th week of age. The corresponding values of the bronze type turkey were 69.43±0.,76%, 70.23±2.07% and 71.86±1.20%, respectively. The LVEF% of the bronze type turkey was significantly higher (p< 0.05) on the 20th week than that of the BUT 8 meat-type turkey. The relative cardiac output (1/min/dm3) of the BUT 8 meat-type turkey was 0.48 l/min/dm3 on the 12th week of age, it was 0.29 l/min/dm3 on the 16th week of age and 0.19 l/min/dm3 on the 20th week of age. The corresponding values of the bronze type turkey were significantly higher at all time points, namely 0.72 l/min/dm3 on the 12th week of age, 0.55 l/min/dm3 at the 16th week of age and 0.44 l/min/dm 3 on the 20th week of age.
