The nature of the mitochondrial crystalline inclusions found in the liver of patients suffering from the Gilbert's disease was studied by enzymatic digestion of ultrathin sections. The crystalline lattice was highly susceptible to pepsin, moderately susceptible to pronase and not susceptible to trypsin. A large proportion of the crystalline inclusions is proteinacious and has an acidic character.
