Abstract

In the described experiments, the thermal decomposition of isobutane has been studied in the presence of nitric oxide. The formation of H//2, CH//4, C//2H//4, C//2H//6, C//3H//6, C//3H//8, i-C//4H//8, N//2, N//2O, CH//3CN, H//2O and a number of unidentified compounds containing oxygen and nitrogen was observed. The initial rate of formation of hydrogen and the hydrocarbons decreased in the presence of small amounts (0-15%) of nitric oxide. Higher amounts of nitric oxide gave rise to an increase in the rate of formation of most of the products. The rate of formation of nitrogen can approximately be expressed by an equation derived for this purpose. The mechanism suggested includes the formation of ″polymeric″ radicals followed by isomerization and decomposition.
