Abstract

The effect of iron was investigated in an Al-3. 2 wt. % Zn-2. 3 wt. % Mg alloy, It was found that even 0. 05 at. % Fe accelerates the nucleation of G. P. zones thereby reducing the period of incubation for the growth of hardness. Any further increment of the iron content produces only slight increases in the extra resistivity and growth of the hardness during the process of zone formation. In the presence of iron the stability of G. P. zones as well as the rate of growth of the eta phase is increased.
