Effect of heat treatment on the immersion enthalpy of polymer based carbons

Abstract

Polyethyleneterephthalate, polyacrylonitrile and cellulose polymers were heat treated at various temperature values between 750-1200 °C in nitrogen atmosphere. The specific surface area, the porosity and the immersional enthalpy measured with methanol and benzene were followed concurrently. The cellulose and the polyethyleneterephthalate based chars show similar properties, as it was found recently from their adsorption from binary liquid mixtures as well. The highly developed polycondensed carbon network of the polyacrylonitrile derived char at 1200 °C is very obvious from the heat of immersion values.
