Abstract

The isothermal precipitation kinetics was measured in Al(Mn), Al(MnFe), Al(MnSi) and Al(MnFeSi) alloys by electrical resistivity and thermoelectric power measurements. It is shown that the change of this quantities originates from the change in the Mn content of the solid solution. The kinetic curves were fitted by Avrami type functions. The Avrami exponent was always less than one. The solubility of Mn is similar in the Al(Mn) and Al(MnSi) alloys and is lower in the Al(MnFe) and Al(MnFeSi) alloys. The precipitation proceeds very slowly in the Al(Mn) alloys, and it is faster in the Al(MnSi) alloy, while the Al(Fe) and Al(FeSi) behave similarly. The effect of Fe and Si on the nucleation and stability of the precipitates containing Mn is also discussed.
